Sony RX1R III First Impressions Video

I just uploaded a 10-minute video discussing my first impressions and thoughts on the RX1R III. As I mentioned yesterday, I will be sharing at least one photo each day that I capture with the camera. At the end of the month, I can truly do a 30-day review of the camera with tons of experience having put the camera to use.

Day #5 Photos

This old tractor is in a field near my home in Montana. It likely hasn’t moved in decades.

I’ll be posting my favorites to the @jeradhillphoto Instagram, so make sure to follow there as well.

Shutter Speed Limitations

There are some misconceptions about shutter speed limitations on this camera. The camera has a leaf shutter, which is located in the lens, not inside the camera body like on mirrorless cameras. The leaf shutter has a limit of 1/2000 from f/2 to f/3.5. Once you close the aperture down to f/4 you can get the shutter speed to 1/3200. Stop down to f/5.6, and you get the maximum shutter speed of 1/4000. The reason for this limitation is that shutter that closes is actually the aperture blades of the lens. With a wide open aperture of f/2 to f/3.5 the blades couldn’t close fast enough to allow for any faster of a shutter speed than 1/2000.

The camera does have an electronic shutter, which doesn’t move the aperture blades at all and allows for up to 1/8000. The electronic shutter on this camera produces pretty bad rolling shutter which can produce a distorted photo. A small amount of rolling shutter could be fixed in Lightroom, but too much and the photo is ruined. You won’t have issues if you are holding the camera still and your subject is also still; but if that was the case, why would you need a fast shutter speed?

ND is a must!

This camera will need an ND Filter on it if you plan to shoot outside. I have a couple of options in the 49mm filter thread that I purchased a few years ago for the Leica Q3.

I have used ND Filters from a variety of different brands and have almost completely moved over to the NiSi True Color ND-Vario filters. When I don’t need ND, one of my favorite filters is the ShortStache Everyday Filter by Polar Pro.
